Sacramento Business Journal: MIND Institute Starts Clinical Trial for Autism
Wednesday, May 5th - 2010
by Kathy Roberston, Staff writer
The MIND Institute at UC Davis is enrolling participants in clinical trials for an autism treatment developed by Curemark LLC, a drug research and development company in Rye, N.Y.
Curemark’s treatment is based on research that shows enzyme deficiencies in autistic children cause an inability to digest protein. This affects the production of amino acids, the building blocks of chemicals essential for brain function.
The company’s CM-AT autism treatment was recently designated by the federal Food and Drug Administration as a fast-track drug. It is one of the first therapies to address the underlying physiology of autism rather than simply treat symptoms.
The UC Davis Medical Investigation of Neurodevelopment Disorders (MIND) Institute joins Curemark’s network of more than a dozen sites across the country conducting CM-AT trials with a total of 170 children.
The institute will enroll about 10 patients in the trial. Children ages 3 to 8 with autism are eligible for the 12-week study, which will begin in a few weeks.
For more information, contact the MIND Institute at 916-703-0280 or visit mindinstitute.org or clinicaltrials.gov and search for “Curemark.” Originally published by The Sacramento Business Journal.
