Houston Business Journal: UT Houston Involved in Autism Treatment Clinical Trial
Wednesday, February 10th - 2010
The University of Texas in Houston is part of a Phase III clinical trial for CM-AT, an autism treatment being developed by Curemark LLC.
Houston is one of 12 sites participating in the trial of the treatment, which is will be one of the first therapies to address the underlying physiology of autism, rather than just treat its symptoms, according to Rye, N.Y.-based Curemark, a biotechnology company.
CM-AT is based on research that shows enzyme deficiencies in autistic children, resulting in an inability to digest protein. The inability to digest protein affects the production of amino acids, the building blocks of chemicals essential for brain function. New data released in December by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicated that autism affects 1 in 110 children.
