Curemark LLC is conducting clinical trials at the Southwest Autism and Resource Center in Phoenix and 11 other sites across the U.S. on a treatment that helps children digest proteins.
CM-AT is a medicine that can be sprinkled on the food of autistic children, who often have problems digesting proteins decreasing amino acid production and harming brain function.
The trials have begun in Phoenix as well as at Pennsylvania State University’s Medical Center in Hershey, Pa., Orange City, Fla., and the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Curemark is based in Rye, N.Y., and specializes in drugs for neurological diseases. In October, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control estimated 673,000 U.S. children have some form of autism including one in 58 boys. The clinical trials involve children ages 3 to 8.
